Huge Children’s Consignment Sale this Weekend

If you’re in the Rochester, New York area this weekend, don’t miss the twice annual Weepeats sale at Minett Hall at the former Dome Arena. It starts Friday and runs through Sunday. You’ll find clothing for infants, youth and teens as well as baby gear, toys, bedding, and books from more than 800 individual consignors. I’ve seen the prices first-hand and you will be thrilled by the bargains.

More Thrifty Tips

Some of my tips and suggestions for finding the best thrift shop deals just ran in today’s Democrat & Chronicle: http://tinyurl.com/nec7n8.

Tip: Dry cleaning items purchased from a thrift store

If you’ve been shying away from buying thrift store clothing with a care tag indicating it needs dry cleaning, check again. You may not need to pay to dry clean it after all.

In fact, if the tag reads “Dry Clean,” you can probably wash the garment carefully by hand without any damage. Not always, but most of the time. “Dry Clean” is the suggested means of cleaning the article of clothing. However, if the tag indicates the fabric is “Dry Clean Only,” tossing it in the washing machine is almost guaranteed to damage it – I wouldn’t try it.

So the next time you spot a gorgeous outfit with a “Dry Clean” tag inside, depending on the price, you may want to try washing it by hand or on your washing machine’s lowest setting. You’ll likely save yourself a big dry cleaning bill.

Pay pennies for new-to-you clothing and housewares

Imagine being able to buy pricey, but gently used, name brand outfits for your kids from Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister or North Face for a small fraction of what they cost new. You'll even spot furniture, silver and glassware for your home for less than a meal out. Or find something for yourself from Chico’s, J. Jill or Lilly Pulitzer and pay for it with the change from the bottom of your purse. Those are the kinds of deals to be had at thrift shops.
